Introducing: Pinatex®

Thanks to over seven years of research and development by Dr. Carmen Hijosa, a leathergoods expert, Maha Loka is proud to announce our collaboration using Pinatex as our new leather alternative for our Be Great bag.

In line with Maha Loka’s mission to provide sustainable fashion sourced from this Great World, Piñatex® is made of fibre from the leaves of the pineapple plant. These leaves are discarded from the pineapple harvest, so the raw material requires no additional environmental resources to produce.

You can learn more about Pinatex and the process involved in its creation here.

Piñatex® is one of those rare products of design thinking that hits all the sustainability buttons at once: it is a material that is completely cradle to cradle, it substitutes leather that has a very heavy environmental and welfare impact, and it brings new income streams to subsistence farmers, allowing them to fully utilise their crops. The implementation of Piñatex® will have far-reaching societal and environmental benefits.
